Pillsbury introduced Funny Face Drink Mix in 1964. It was a great kid’s choice and alternative to traditional carbonated soft drinks and fruit juices. It competed directly with Kool Aid which had been around since the 1930’s, and was the clear market leader. What was unique about Funny Face is that it was originally promoted as a dietary drink, made without sugar, and artificially sweetened. Funny Face, unlike Kool Aid, had a unique character for each flavor making it very appealing for advertising and promotions.. From 1964 to 1968 Funny Face was sweetened with cyclamates. In 1968 Funny Face was pulled off of the market as cyclamates were banned by the FDA. In 1969 Funny Face re-emerged sweetened with saccharine. However, the after-taste of saccharine affected sales, and in 1970 the new Funny Face was introduced in which the consumer had to “just add sugar”. Tastes improved as did sales, and in 1972 vitamin C was added. Larger packs were later available in which the sugar was included. The final flavor was added in 1983 … Chocolate.
Cherry was an original flavor in 1964. Called Chinese Cherry, though later changed to Choo Choo Cherry due to sensitivity concerns. Captain Black Cherry was added with saccharine in 1969, and Chilly Cherry Cola came as a sugar variety in 1972.
Orange was an original flavor in 1964. It was initially called Injun Orange, and was quickly replaced due to concerns for Native Americans. It was re-named Jolly Olly Orange. In 1969 a tart and tangy variety was added that was sweetened with saccharine.

Load Mouth Lime was in the original flavor group in 1964. Lefty Lemon was added, but later combined as Lefty Lemon-Lime with the arrival of the saccharine varieties. 1969 saw the Tart n’ Tangy Lemon variety. In 1970 a Tart Lil’ Lemonade flavor was derived, and in 1972 the all sugar and vitamin C variety dropped the combination of lime, and was just Lefty Lemon. Lemon was re-flavored and named Lefty Lemonade in 1974, and a Pistol Pink Lemonade variety was also added.
Freckle Face Strawberry, Goofy Grape, and Rootin’ Tootin’ Raspberry were all originals from 1964, and retained their distinct identity and flavors through all of the Funny Face formulations. Goofy Grape was considered the primary spokesman of the Funny Face Brand.
Loud Mouth Punch was added in 1969 as a saccharine variety, and continued as a flavor through all future formulations. In 1974 an alternate punch-like flavor was added, Rudy Tutti Frutti.
In 1974 two unique flavors were added, Rah Rah Root Beer and With It Watermelon. The final Funny Face flavor was added in 1983, Chug a’ Lug Chocolate which coincidentally bore the exact same character features as With It Watermelon … except the color.
