Stars Year Added
Official Flags of the United States
Flags changed as each state was granted statehood which has always been on July 4th since 1818. The longest span without any changes was for 47 years from 1912, when New Mexico and Arizona were added, until 1959 when a star was added representing Alaska. Currently we have gone 46 years since Hawaii’s star was added in 1960. There are a few possibilities for the next star: Puerto Rico, District of Columbia, Lincoln, Jefferson. The current flag design is fixed at thirteen stripes, one for each of the Original 13 States. However, in 1795 the flag had fifteen stripes … the last and only flag that did not have thirteen stripes.
