Sunglasses that Made You Snowblind, Made in Japan
Stop any man or woman between the ages of 40 to 50, and the odds are 98% that they wear corrective eye lenses. Today in 2006, this later-tier "baby boom" age slot is by far the most in need of glasses, contacts, bi-focals, and eye surgery. Why, and where did it start?
We can thank the Japanese and the General Douglas Macarthur. The General did a great job in the late-1940's and 1950's to rebuild the Japanese infrastructure into a peace ally with the United States and Western Europe.
It wasn't long before the US shores were flooded with "great" Japanese products that bore the label MADE IN JAPAN. Back in the 1950's Made In Japan meant cheap quality. It wasn't until the 1980's that Japan actually surpassed the US in product quality and reputation. However, the low priced products flooding our shores proved too much to pass up for the wide-eyed American public.
We all can thank General Macarthur and those great doctors of the 50's and 60's who misdiagnosed a major problem just as they missed the debilitating effects and epidemic carnages caused by smoking, lead, and drinking. Those doctors and health professional were really something. It would take two generations to determine the "errors of their ways", and the gross inadequacies of their self-proclaimed medical expertise.
Cheap products included over 35 unique brands of colorful plastic children's sunglasses .. all MADE IN JAPAN without any safeguards and/or standards. These glasses did a great job of shading a child's eyes ... and they were made of un-breakable plastic too! These modern marvels of Sino-engineering only shaded the eyes with colored plastic. They offered no protection from the ultra-violet (UV) or the infrared (heat) spectrums of the rays of the sun. Better yet, since they did shade the eyes, a child would be prone to open their eyes even wider thereby exposing themselves to over three time the UV and thermal rays that they would undergo without any glasses on at all!
